October 13, 2pm-4:30pm (link)

Produce Notes: May 29, 2019

As the weather (finally!) starts to warm up, we’re reaching for fruit - specifically, we’re reaching for slices of sweet orange and green honeydew, our Super Fresh Deal through June 4th!  Did you know that orange-fleshed honeydew is a hybrid variety created by crossing green-fleshed honeydew with an orange fleshed muskmelon? Orange-fleshed honeydew is closer to a cantaloupe in terms of its firm-yet-juicy flesh, but its skin is pale yellow-green just like green-fleshed honeydew!

Also coming in juicy are green grapes and stone fruits perfect for snacking. Green grapes - while tasty on their own - can also be frozen and used as ice cubes for your summer beverages; they won’t water down your drink and they make a nice snack at the end, just be careful while you sip!

Apricots, pluots, white nectarines, and donut peaches are looking especially tempting - the donut peach (originally grown in China as an ornamental tree) is a particularly delicate and aromatic fruit, so don't be put off by their petite size! Like cherries, other stone fruit may be challenged by the stormy weather of the last few weeks, so make sure to stock up! Any extras are perfect tucked into an easy galette or jam.

On the vegetable front we have California-grown bi-color sweet corn at a sweet deal that won’t last and vibrant heirloom tomatoes from just over the border in Baja; remember that tomato supplies and pricing are expected to be volatile as we enter summer, so get them while they’re here! California romaine lettuce heads are ready for your salad and snacking needs and everyone’s favorite versatile veggie cauliflower remains in steady supply.
