Produce Notes: May 1, 2019

With a Fresh Deals focus on Cinco de Mayo, you’ll discover a wide variety of organic produce essentials you’ll need for putting together the perfect fiesta. Colorful peppers are poppin with jalapeño (hot), serrano (hotter), habanero (hottest), and sweet peppers are all on sale. Stock up and experiment with them all before the big day.

Both avocados and roma tomato availability has been unsteady with high prices, but we secured a super deal for this week, so enjoy!.

Mangoes are plentiful and at a super price. Ataulfos mangoes are oval-shaped and slightly crook-necked with a golden yellow exterior and bright yellow flesh.  Ataulfos have skin that is tough with flesh that’s soft, sweet, and juicy. Mangoes are best stored at room temperature until ripe. Once ripe, keep refrigerated up to one week.

Tomatillos are in strong supply. Commonly known as husk tomatoes, they have a characteristic papery outer skin and very tart flavor. The slightly sticky husk encloses a firm, green fruit. These “little tomatoes,” are perfect to use raw or cooked, in salsas, sauces, or even jams. For an easy organic tomatillo sauce, boil 8 peeled tomatillos, ½;;;;;;;;; onion, bunch of cilantro, salt, 1 tspn. of granulated garlic in 2 cups of water for 5 min. After cooling for 5 minutes, pour everything from the pan into a blender and blend well.

It’s May and Salad Month! A great occasion to celebrate all greens from spinach and kale to butter lettuce. Our organic red kale really caught our eye this morning. Known as the “greens your kids will eat,” these greens have frilly leaves with contrasting centers and green edges. It has a sweet taste, so not as bitter as most kale varieties.

We’ve been wanting to put artichokes on special for awhile. Take advantage of the special pricing this week, at $3.49 each from local, family-owned Ocean Mist Farms.

Nothing beats fresh, local berries - now in steady supply. This week, Coke Farm's strawberries are a must buy.

And with strawberry season, comes rhubarb! We mentioned it last week, and it's still around. The taste of rhubarb is somewhat similar to that of green apples - tart! Add sugar to make it sweeter and then bake or cook it. Eat stalks only as the roots and leaves are poisonous.

We’re busy snatching up some great Mother’s Day organic produce deals for next week. This is one of our favorite times of year!
