Produce Notes: May 16, 2019

Over the past couple of months, our awesome produce team has been doing their best to find the balance between bringing you local, seasonal organic produce and bringing you variety. We’re thrilled to report that all signs are pointing to an abundant local summer and you should continue to see an increase in our local produce selection.

California stone fruit season kicks off with peaches! Though running just a few days later than last year, growers are expecting a normal peach and nectarine season with volume picking up at the end of June and into July.

Local organic cantaloupes are on Fresh Deals and are what we’re grabbing this week! Cantaloupe's bright orange flesh is rich in beta carotene - the precursor to vitamin A - and is an excellent source of vitamin C.

We have cherries! These bites of goodness usually land a bit earlier in the month, but the cooler weather is again to blame for the late start. Mid-may rain may damage some of the crop, but growers won’t no more until the rain stops and they can assess.

Supply of organic celery continues to remain tight and high priced. Expect light volumes and high priced product until at least June. We’ll keep you posted.

Watermelon season is heating up. You'll be all set for Memorial Day with increasing supplies expected through the summer months.

Santa Monica has a limited supply of organic mulberries from local grower Morning Song Farm. Did you know that you can go to their farm in Rainbow, California, and pick your own?
