Produce Notes: April 17, 2019

Spruce up your spring, and your holiday tables with selections from this week’s Fresh Deals.

Fuji apples are this week’s Super Fresh Deal. Always a favorite, Fujis offer the color, juice and firmness of a Red Delicious and the heirloom flavor of a Ralls Janet. Excellent for eating, but also perfect for a farm to table Charoset for your Passover seder plate.

Madera, California’s Road 20 Organic Farm brought us gorgeous red spring onions. These long-stem onions are harvested before they reach maturity and resemble scallions but have small onion bulbs at the base. Sweeter and mellower than regular onions, they’re great when eaten raw in a salad or grilled on top of a burger!

Nothing pops more on a plate than purple asparagus. But get it while you can. We’re hearing it’s a short season this year - and purple is the “it” color. For all you purple artichoke lovers, we’re working on it and hoping to have it in by the weekend.

Rhubarb on our minds, and available now. Rhubarb is often considered the darling of the spring season. While it’s technically a vegetable, it’s often prepared as a fruit in culinary practices. Cheers to your rhubarb tart that’s sure to be the stunner of your Easter table!

Over the next couple of weeks to a month, local spring/summer produce should be close to it’s peak. We’re seeing organic watermelon and peaches from Mexico, which tells us California’s bounty is still about 2-3 weeks away.
