Food Packaging Update

An article published this week by Bloomberg Press, titled “Whole Foods Ranked Worst on Cancer-Linked Package Chemicals” highlights per- or poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), a class of industrial chemicals used to repel grease, water and stains in consumer products. According to the EPA, PFAS have been linked to cancer, can harm the immune system, and can accumulate in humans and the environment.

The co-op is aware of the issue and working to get more information. We have already determined that the majority of co-op packaging is not impacted, and have contacted manufacturers of the potentially-affected items. Our goals are to identify which, if any, packaging products may be impacted, and to identify alternatives.

We will post an update with additional information as soon as possible.
The co-op welcomes your feedback.
