Who We Are

Co-opportunity (also known as “The Co-op”) has been providing natural, organic and local foods to the Santa Monica area since 1974. As the only co-op and the only natural foods store of our kind in Los Angeles, we're special in many ways:

  1. We're owned by our local community! Yes, the majority of our shoppers own a piece of Co-opportunity.
  2. Unlike national chains and our surrounding competitors, we exist to serve our member-owners and shoppers, not a distant corporate board. Therefore, service is a priority. Feedback is always welcome as we continuously strive to be our best!
  3. Our 100% Organic produce department is one of the largest and has only the freshest selections of certified organic produce.
  4. Our product standards make us a trusted source for the highest quality organic, local, non GMO and natural foods. We provide our customers with healthy options, and educate them to make the best choices possible!
  5. Cooperative business keeps money in the local economy. We give back to the community and we support local farmers and vendors!

Anyone can shop at the Co-op! And ownership is open to all as well. We believe economic power should be situated locally, where it has the best chance to create and sustain vibrant, livable communities.

Co-opportunity History

  • StoreHistory
    1974

Four founders started the Co-op out of a tiny garage in West L.A. As the ownership ranks swelled, the Co-op quickly outgrew the confines of the cramped garage and relocated to a proper storefront on Santa Monica Blvd.

Finding a new storefront was a challenge. More owners meant more viewpoints to consider. After much deliberation a final consensus was reached—the Co-op would move to Santa Monica from its previous location in West L.A. A small place on 16th and Broadway, a quiet, commercial-industrial area in Santa Monica on a lot packed with Hertz rental trucks and used cars, was selected. The larger operation prompted the Co-op to change its status to a cooperative corporation, and elect its first board of directors.

    1986 - 1994

After enduring an era of disappearing profits and dwindling patronage, the Co-op’s board hired a new general manager and gave him real power as a manager. Under a succession of active and constructive boards, the Co-op weathered a stormy period in the 1980’s to emerge as a healthy organization in the 1990’s and into the new millennium.

In 1995 the Co-op moved across the street to a brand new building. The move doubled the Co-op's retail space and sales increased immediately.

Today we're a thriving Cooperative with deep roots in the community. We've undergone a major makeover of not only our physical location, but our operations in general. It's amazing how the vision of four founding owners operating out of a tiny garage has evolved into a thriving Co-op with more than 11,000 owners!
